energy storage systems
You don’t need to be entirely off grid to benefit from a battery storage system. Most grid connected PV simply allows some power to be used in the home when the sun is out – all the rest goes back into the grid. With an Energy Storage System (ESS), you use power when it is coming from the solar panels, but a battery is also charged so that when the sun goes down, you can continue to use power you generated earlier. In addition, should the grid fail, your system will seamlessly switch over to battery power providing protection for freezers, computers etc.
An ESS doesn’t need as large a battery as a fully off grid system, so reducing costs. For much of the year this can be sufficient to meet most or all of a household’s needs, and in the winter months, the grid acts as an additional ‘battery’, allowing you to keep your own batteries charged and in good condition for when they are needed.
